At Finest Smile, our experienced hygienists and therapists have developed a comprehensive periodontal programme to help stabilise the disease and keep it in a manageable condition. You will have a series of appointments so we can make an assessment, take full mouth periodontal charting and pocket measurements, take X-rays and undertake any professional plaque removal that is required.
You DO NOT need to be registered with us, or have seen your dentist in Bournemouth recently, to visit our dental hygiene clinic – you can visit us as a direct access patient! We work closely with a specialist periodontist and will always refer if further specialist intervention is needed.

- 1-6 X-rays may be required (£10 each)

Usually performed as two double sessions of up to 60 minutes each, costing £230
- Series of 1 to 4 appointments, for thorough non-surgical periodontal therapy (professional mechanical plaque and calculus removal below the gum line) of the affected sections of your mouth under local anaesthetic.

What is gum disease?
Gum disease is a condition caused by the immune system reacting to the presence of bacteria in plaque deposits on your teeth. Plaque builds up because of food debris attracting bacteria. Regular brushing removes most of the plaque that builds up during the day, but some areas are hard to reach, particularly around the gum line and between the teeth. These plaque deposits irritate the gum tissue, causing it to become inflamed. This stage of gum disease is known as Gingivitis.
The symptoms include:
- Swollen and red gums
- Bleeding gums
- Sensitivity to temperature
- Bad breath
If left untreated, the gums start to recede as the tissue breaks down. This forms pockets between the gum and tooth, creating vulnerable areas for bacteria to enter. This more destructive stage is called Periodontitis and it cannot be cured, but the process can be slowed down or stopped through regular periodontal appointments and appropriate oral hygiene routine at home. If left to continue without treatment, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss.
