Why do I need regular hygiene appointments?

Regular visits to our Southbourne dental hygienists serving Bournemouth patients help maintain excellent oral health. While you can do a lot of the work at home, especially when it comes to brushing and flossing, regular visits to our hygienists helps keep your mouth in the best condition. They are highly experienced and skilled at removing build-ups of plaque from hard-to-reach areas in your mouth, and can spot signs of gum disease that may otherwise have been missed.

During your hygiene appointment, we take the time to understand your oral health concerns and give you bespoke advice and tips for gum disease prevention and continuing an effective routine at home. Our aim is to help you prevent gum disease, avoid bad breath and maintain a healthy-looking smile.

Frequently asked questions

You may feel some discomfort while we are scaling your teeth to remove the build-ups of plaque and tartar. We make sure you are feeling relaxed and ready before we begin, and are happy to stop at any point to give you a break if you need it.

We also have a hygiene treatment option including local anaesthetic to numb the area if this will help you. For a gentle and very effective comprehensive clean, you may wish to consider our Air Polishing treatment option.

If plaque builds up around the teeth and gum line, the gum tissues can become inflamed. The irritated gums often bleed while brushing, making them susceptible to the bacteria in the mouth. Swollen, red gums are often one of the first signs of the early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, however it is important to remember that smoking can mask the bleeding and signs of gum disease. Other symptoms include tooth sensitivity and bad breath. If left untreated, this gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of the condition, periodontitis. This isn’t reversible but is manageable with effective treatment.

Some visible signs of gum disease include bleeding gums, bad breath, loose teeth, receding gums and tooth sensitivity. However, the symptoms of gum disease can be mild, so you may need to see the hygienist to know it is there. This way, we can treat the issue before it is allowed to worsen and become a more complex problem, requiring more specialist care.

Most patients are advised to have an appointment with the hygienist twice a year, in line with your routine check ups. This does depend on your oral health. In some cases, we may advise you to book an appointment more or less frequently to help you achieve the best result and a happy, healthy smile.
